Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6 a.m. on Monday, Jerry L. McCullough, 67, Cloverdale, was westbound on County Road 1200 South, just west of County Road 550 East, in a 2004 Toyota Corolla when he hit a deer.

Lt. Donnie Pettit estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 11:25 a.m. on Sunday, David L. Trent, 59, Roachdale, was westbound on State Road 236 following a hay wagon in a 2015 Toyota Highlander. Dakota J. Wood, 21, Roachdale, was behind Trent in a 2009 Chevrolet Impala.

Trent told Deputy Matt Biggs that a passing zone became available so he checked his driver’s side mirror and signaled his intent to pass.

However, Wood was already attempting to pass both vehicles and had been in Trent’s blind spot.

Trent collided with Wood in the passing lane.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 5:12 p.m. on Friday, Henry D. Carter, 16, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 200 West, just south of County Road 125 South, in a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer.

Carter told Deputy Riley Houghton he came to a left turn in the road and lost control in the gravel.

He then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll down an embankment and into the creek.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 3:54 p.m. on Wednesday, Jacob O. Barrientos, 24, Brazil, was northbound on U.S. 231 attempting to turn left onto the Marathon station at U.S. 231 and U.S. 40 in a 2000 Hyundai Elantra.

Barrientos told Lt. Pettit that the southbound light turned green and traffic began to move, except for a 2000 Ford Focus. Barrientos believe the driver was letting him make his turn, so he attempted to proceed into the station.

However, the other driver, Rodney W. Garland, 51, Martinsville, said he started south and Barrientos turned in front of him, causing a collision.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.
