‘Honorably Retired’

Thursday, June 14, 2018
As members of the Greencastle VFW and American Legion Honor Guard stand at attention, a flag deemed “unserviceable in a worthy cause” is set aflame by Sons of the American Legion Sergeant-at-Arms Jeff Bray during Legion Post 58 Flag Day disposal ceremony Thursday evening. Prior to disposal, the flag was presented to the post commander, first vice commander and second vice commander before being honorably retired by Bray.

While the ceremony, which was attended by Legion and VFW members, four active police officers and dozens of citizens, involved just one flag, Bray said he had eight bags of flags that have been brought to the Legion throughout the year for disposal. He estimated he would be continuing his duty for at least three hours following the 6:30 p.m. ceremony.

  • Most Cub and Bot Scouts in the County offer this service as well in a dignified ceremony. Contact any of them for help with an Honorable Flag Retirement Ceremony as well. (It is part of their advancement!)

  • The Greencastle Boy Scouts were asked to participate in this years' Flag Disposal Ceremony held on Flag Day, June 14th at American Legion Post 58. However, they did not respond to our request and were not present at the ceremony.
