Betty Hughes

This summer, 25 different charitable organizations, scholarships and endowments are participating in the Putnam County Community Foundation Share the Dream program. The fundraising program offers proportionally awarded grant prizes to participants who receive at least 10 donations of $25 or more between May 1 and Aug. 31. Each of the 25 organizations will be highlighted in this series.

Founded by the philanthropic sorority Kappa Delta Phi, the Betty Hughes Memorial Fund strives to enlighten, educate and entertain the children of Putnam County.

Kappa Delta Phi is a service organization that focuses their time, effort and available funds on the support and welfare of the children of Putnam County. Members volunteer at the Reality Experience and Coats for Kids, provide needed supplies and clothing items to the eight county elementary schools and contribute food, clothing and gifts for Giving Tree families.

Betty Hughes had a love for children and a passion for homemaking, Kappa Delta Phi and sports. Betty was a humanitarian and was always ready and willing to assist the less fortunate. After her passing, the sorority started the fund with donations made in her memory.

The mission of their endowment is to provide funds for special events, projects, or needs at the Imagination Portal, the children’s library at the Putnam County Public Library. The Betty Hughes Memorial Fund is participating in the 2018 Share the Dream at the Putnam County Community Foundation with a long-term goal of increasing the size of the endowment to provide more special programs and events at the Imagination Portal.

Sorority members of the Kappa Delta Phi Gamma Phi Chapter and other individuals who are passionate about children’s reading development should consider donating to this endowment to further impact the children in our community.
