School buses look and operate a lot differently than they did 73 years ago.

Greencastle Community School Corporation finally has a transportation facility that reflects those changes.

During the Monday school board meeting, Superintendent Jeff Hubble reported that all buses have now gone through their summer cleaning, after which all were driven to the new transportation center on Tennessee Street.

That move leaves the old bus barn, quonset hut and a pair of other buildings on Vine Street, all but empty.

Hubble said that some tools still needed to be moved, plus a transfer of computers to the facility on July 2, and the move to the new center will be complete.

“We’ll pretty much be done with (the old building),” Hubble said.

While no plans for the old bus barn site, which includes multiple lots on either side of the 300 block of North Vine Street, Hubble confirmed that multiple realtors have inquired about the properties.

Hubble added that the site has been appraised.

The school corporation could be in a good position to sell the properties, considering a recent shortage of available homes reported by city officials.

In other business:

• Greencastle High School senior Parker Black made a $2,100 donation to GCSC Food Services Director Deborah Carrico.

The proceeds are from the May concert Black organized called Project Cultivate featuring his band, Dreadful Greta, and fellow local acts Gus Moon and War Radio.

The idea of Project Cultivate is to help kids at all Greencastle school buildings who do not have money in their lunch accounts.

“I felt there was a need for an account in our school system to take care of the children who could not pay for their lunch,” Black said, “so they can have a healthy meal for a good work day.”

Black said he plans to host the concert annually.

• Retired GHS Principal Russ Hesler completed his last official act on Monday, June 25 when he awarded two diplomas to students who completed their graduation requirements in summer school.

All summer school programs were completed either on June 22 or 25.

New GHS Principal Chad Rodgers will be taking the reins in July.

• The board approved changes to a number of handbooks for the upcoming school year, including the student-parent guide, the salaried classified handbook, the hourly classified handbook and the bus driver handbook.
