Women Walk Putnam County stepping up for fourth season

Monday, July 16, 2018

The American Heart Association (2018) reports heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States of America.

Reports show heart disease causes one in three deaths each year. While we know that some individuals are more at risk for heart disease than others, we also know that incorporating healthy lifestyle changes positively affects the longevity of one’s life.

We also know research proves adapting exercise and healthy eating into our lifestyle helps in preventing heart disease.

Therefore, in efforts of addressing the dietary and exercise aspect of a healthy lifestyle, we would like to introduce two walking programs available through Purdue Extension-Putnam County.

Women Walk Putnam County, is a program for individuals to participate in the healthy activity of walking together each week while engaging in conversation and meeting new friends. Women Walk Putnam County is a free walking program sponsored by the Purdue Extension Office and Putnam County Hospital.

Through this program, the organizations strive to encourage women to walk into a healthier life while decreasing the prevalence of heart disease. There will be a kickoff for this program with a luncheon and guest speaker presentation on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at shelterhouse No. 5 in Greencastle’s Robe-Ann Park.

Another program Purdue Extension would like to offer is titled Get WalkIN’. Get WalkIN’ is an e-mail-based walking program. Participants can sign up, walk on their own and receive e-mailed support and information. Participants will be asked to complete two short online surveys.

Any resident of the county 18 years old or older may enroll. If you are interested in participating or want more information, contact Jennifer Cannon via e-mail (cannon16@purdue.edu).

Visit www.extension.purdue.edu/putnam or you can contact the local Purdue Extension Office by calling 653-8411 for more information regarding this week’s column topic or to RSVP for upcoming events. It is always best to call first to assure items are ready when you arrive and to RSVP for programs. While many publications are free, some do have a fee.
