Women Walk Putnam County stepping up for fifth season

Monday, August 13, 2018

The American Heart Association reports that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. Reports show heart disease causes one in three deaths each year.

While some individuals are more at risk for heart disease than others, it is also known that incorporating healthy lifestyle changes can positively affect the longevity of one’s life. Research proves adapting exercise and healthy eating into our lifestyle helps in preventing heart disease.

Therefore, in efforts of addressing the dietary and exercise aspect of a healthy lifestyle, two walking programs are being made available through Purdue Extension-Putnam County.

Women Walk Putnam County, is a program for individuals to participate in the healthy activity of walking together each week while engaging in conversation, and meeting new friends.

Women Walk Putnam County is a free walking program sponsored by the Purdue Extension Office and Putnam County Hospital. Through this program, the organizations strive to encourage women to walk into a healthier life while decreasing the prevalence of heart disease.

The program will kick off with a luncheon and guest speaker presentation on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to noon under shelterhouse No. 5 at Robe-Ann Park in Greencastle.

Another program that Purdue Extension would like to offer is Get WalkIN’.

Get WalkIN’ is an e-mail based walking program. Participants can sign up, walk on their own and receive e-mailed support and information. Participants will be asked to complete two short online surveys.

Any county resident who is age 18 years and older may enroll. Anyone interested in participating or wanting more information may contact Jennifer Cannon via e-mail at cannon16@purdue.edu.
