PREP ROUNDUP: Tiger Cubs shut out North 6-0

Greencastle hosted undefeated North Putnam on Tuesday in girls’ soccer action, and handed the Cougars their first loss of the season with a 6-0 triumph.

Greencastle scored one goal in the first half, then added five more in the second half to seal the win.

“The scoring machine was ultimately turned on during the second half, with many combinations and passes successfully garnering the back of the net,” coach Angie Weeks said.

Erin Thomas had four goals, while Kennedy Trigg and Gretchen Weliever each had one.

Trigg, Thomas and Weliever each had one assist.

In other soccer:

Tri-West 4, North Putnam 0 (girls) — The Lady Cougars lost to the Lady Bruins on Thursday in a deceiving match.

“The final score doesn’t reflect the effort put into the game by the Lady Cougars,” North coach James Hilton said. “We had some unlucky plays but never gave up until the final whistle. “

The Lady Cougars will have a long Labor Day weekend off with a 4-2 record ready for the second half of the season, Hilton said.

Southmont 1, North Putnam 1 (boys) — The Cougars played a hard physical game against Southmont, coach Kyle Morgan said.

“We controlled the tempo, the possession and had more shots on target for the game,” he said.

The Mounties scored a game-tying penalty shot with a minute and a half in regulation.

Brayden Polley had the goal for the Cougars.

The Cougars are back in action Tuesday at West Vigo, going into the holiday weekend with a record of 3-2-2.

Volleyball

North Putnam 3, Eminence 0 — The Cougars topped the Eels 25-18, 25-6, 25-9 on Tuesday.

Brie Miller led the led the Cougars with eight kills, Haley Stevenson had seven, Kinzey Young had six and Bradi Gierke added four.

Gierke served nine aces, while Kyla Willis had seven, Miller had five, Haley Dickson had four aces, Olivia Haste, Zoey Dickson and Clarissa Gibson each had one ace. Willis had six digs.

Haley and Zoey Dickson each had eight assists, while Gibson had four.

North won the JV match 25-16, 25-11.

In other volleyball:

Greencastle 3, South Vermillion 0 —The Tiger Cubs defeated South Vermillion on Tuesday night.

“The team started off a little slowly, but once the offense picked up, the team was able to pull away,” coach Maggie Walters noted.

Junior Macy Clark led the offense with 12 kills. Allison Stevens ran a fast offense in the middle, recording 11 kills. Jalyn Duff had 28 assists and did a nice job of using all three hitters in the front row, Walters said.

Lilly Meyer added eight kills, and Anna Zellers also recorded 11 assists.

Mckenzie Woodall controlled the first contact in the back row with 14 digs, allowing the Cubs to run a quicker offense, Walters added.

“Duff and Ivy Wright both served aggressively, getting the Wildcats out of system,” Walters said.

Duff served 24 times, and Wright served 17 times; both ended with 4 aces.

Tennis

West Vigo 3, Greencastle 2 — The Vikings won two of the three singles matches and one of the doubles matches to pick up the win.

Greencastle is now 2-5 for the season and 2-2 in the WIC.

Both Trent Ross at No. 1 singles and Anthony Conley at No. 2 singles are 4-3 for the season.

The Cubs will travel to Crawfordsville this upcoming Saturday for the Macy Tournament.

Golf

Greencastle 210, West Vigo 240 — The Cubs won their second straight dual match.

Bailey Shuee led Greencastle with a 39, while Molly Ramey shot a 52, Kadence Shaner had a 55 and Jennifer Scott had a 64.

“The Cubs shot a good 210 score and won by 30 shots against West Vigo,” GHS coach Steve Paquin said. “Bailey led the Cubs with a very good score of 39, and had two birdies during with a few pars to make her score. She also had two penalty strokes which is further evidence of how well she played.

Paquin noted continued improvement in Ramey.

“She continues improving her shot making, but could score even lower with some improvement in chipping and putting,” he said. “Kadence played No. 3 and shot her best score of the season and continues to get better daily. Jennifer and Serena are lowering their scores by making good contact with the ball and moving from tee to green much better.

“With more practice and course competition, this team will get better and give their opponents good competition.”
