RUSSELLVILLE -- During what was an efficient dialogue between town officials and residents during its August meeting, the Russellville Town Council discussed how to best fix a drainage issue on the town’s roads.

A concerned resident informed the council that water from recent heavy rainfall had been pooling on First and Fordice streets. One cause given by the individual was that the roadways are not level, and that the water is not able to drain to the side.

After the resident provided potential remedies to facilitate the draining, The council agreed that the roadway might have to be reworked to level it out, and that it would send an expert to survey it.

The town council also addressed an issue pertaining to residents who obtain building permits. The issue came to the council’s attention as a resident was trying to build a garage.

According to council member Cathy Jones, Duke Energy stepped in an stopped the construction because the resident did not obtain a building permit.

Residents present at the meeting pointed out that they had not been required to obtain a permit for such projects, especially as they lived within city limits. Jones said that the resident building the garage was planning to utilize separate electrical service, and that Duke Energy wanted to cover its liabilities on the property.

Pertaining to its recent Community Crossings grant, Clerk-Treasurer Martha Mandleco informed the council that the roadwork was complete. She relayed that a bill for the cost of the project on the town’s end would be coming in soon.

Additionally, a resident asked the council if there was coal mix left over from that project to fill in pot holes around the town. The board assured her that it would look into fixing them, but did not guarantee that there would be enough coal mix to fill in all of them.

The next meeting of the Russellville Town Council and Russellville Water Board is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 in the Russellville Town Hall at 211 S. Harrison St.
