Greencastle firefighters came out in force to respond to a house fire located in the Sherwood addition late Friday morning.

The Greencastle Fire Department received a call at 9:58 a.m. that dispatched them to 901 Evensview Dr. where the fire had started in the upper part of the residence.

Firefighters arrived at the house at approximately 10:05 a.m. and began working to contain the fire. According to GFD's log on the incident, the fire was listed as being under control at 10:32 a.m. GFD stayed at the home until they cleared the scene at 11:33 a.m...

In a statement to the Banner Graphic Friday afternoon, GFD Assistant Chief Rob Frank said that a vent fan in a bathroom on the second floor caught fire, suggesting that the flames then traveled up to the attic.

The fire was contained to the attic, and did not spread to the rest of the house as firefighters extinguished the fire.

The home sustained about $40,000 in total damages.

The fire burned through the roof at the back of the house. GFD cut a hole in the front to ventilate the smoke that had built up inside the home.

The home is listed as being owned by Richard and Maurey Martin of Greencastle. Frank said that neither was at the home when the fire started, and that they possibly arrived after the Banner Graphic obtained initial information on the incident.
