James A. Evans, 84, son of Lloyd and Lorena Evans, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16 at his daughter Sara's home while surrounded by family.

He was born May 18, 1934.

Jim graduated from Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School in 1953.

He was a farmer in the Roachdale-Bainbridge area for many years, school bus driver for North Putnam, and retired from the Putnam County Highway Department.

Jim very much loved his wife, Esther Marie; they were married for 47 years. At her funeral he remarked, "Wasn't she the most beautiful woman you've ever seen?" He is surely enjoying stories in heaven with her now. Together they raised three children, Alan, Sara and Lisa.

Grandchildren were greatly enjoyed and shared his life. Zach was the oldest and shared his passion for soccer with his grandfather. Ricki went deer hunting with Jim, and he loved football games with Laren and Luke. In fact, his last conversation had to do with the upcoming North Putnam football game. Morgan shared her love of horses with Jim.

Jim let "the kids be kids." He was not judgmental but a good listener; he was, however, good at giving relationship advice according to his grandchildren.

Jim was a member of the Bainbridge Christian Church, served in the U.S. Army, and helped with 4-H endeavors.

He was an avid mystery reader, bird watcher and skilled woodworker. He loved jellybeans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wilma Wolfley; and his wife.

Survivors include children Alan, Sara (Jim) Sanford and Lisa (Glen) Runnells; and grandchildren Zach Hunter, Ricki Evans, Laren, Morgan and Luke Sanford, and several cousins.

Calling is set from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Sept. 20 at Servies and Morgan Funeral Home, Roachdale, with graveside services at 1 p.m. at Hebron Cemetery at Russellville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Putnam Athletic Department.
