Banner Graphic: How long have you been playing sports, and what have you learned from them?

Ivy Wright: “The first sport I played was softball, and I think I started playing it when I was around four years old. That’s been my main sport ever since. I love sports, not only because of the games but because of the family and the bond that our teams have. Especially with volleyball, that’s what led us to a sectional win; how well we bonded with one another. I started playing volleyball when I was in third grade.”

BG: What specifically do you like about each sport?

IW: “Volleyball is a really high-paced game, and it never stops. Softball is different, and you get a break. I like that about it.”

BG: Have you ever played any other sports?

IW: “I was a cheerleader in middle school and as a freshman, then I had back surgery for scoliosis. I was done with that then.”

BG: What are you plans for after high school?

IW: “I’m not sure where I want to go yet, but I’m going to major in nursing. I became really interested in that after seeing the care that my grandma, who just passed away, received. And from how much they helped me during my surgery at Shriner’s Hospital. That makes me want to give other people that kind of care. I want to get away from home, but not too far away.”

BG: What other things do you do at school besides sports?

IW: “I was in Latin Club for three years, and I’m in Key Club. I’m also an ambassador and I’m in National Honor Society. With Key Club, we do a lot of service project. Last year we went to Kokomo and helped clean up after they had a tornado. We babysit kids around Christmas time, do fund-raisers and collect items for homeless shelters.”

BG: What do you like to do that is not school-related?

IW: “I like to hang out with my family, especially my brothers and siblings, and my nieces and nephews. I am the seventh of eight kids. My sister Delaney is the last one. They used to pick on me, especially my brothers, and they would try to make me tough. I look back on it and I miss those days.”

BG: What are your favorite things to watch and listen to in movies, TV and music?

IW: “My favorite movies are the ‘Pitch Perfect’ movies. I just love those. The first one was the best. I don’t watch TV that much; I’d rather be on my phone. I like country music, especially Thomas Rhett.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

IW: “I want to go to Hawaii. I’ve always wanted to go there. I’ve seen pictures, and it looks so beautiful.”

BG: What are your favorite and least favorite foods?

IW: “My favorite is spaghetti, and my least favorite is asparagus. It’s really gross. I remember screaming when I was a little kid and my parents would make me eat it.”

BG: Do you have pets?

IW: “We have two Rottweilers, Lola and Carly. My dog is a toy poodle named Paris. I got her as a Christmas present one year. We have two outside coon dogs, but I don’t mess with them much. Delaney has a cat that we just rescued.”

BG: You must have a lot of land for all those animals.

IW: “I love living in the country. My house is way off the road and we have a lot of privacy. We can basically do whatever we want to do, like shoot off fireworks or ride four-wheelers whenever we want.”

BG: Summarize your overall Greencastle experience.

IW: “I love Greencastle. The teachers are great here, and I’ve never had a problem with any teacher. They’re so helpful. My favorite class this year is AP Language with Mr. [Donovan] Wheeler. It’s supposed to prepare us for college, which it does, but he makes it fun too. I’m definitely going to miss it. My class has been the best of friends, and I’m going to miss them when we all go our separate ways.”

BG: After college, do you want to live around here or go far away?

IW: “I’d like to stay here. All my family is here, and when it comes down to it I don’t think I could leave them. I don’t like the whole big-city idea like Indianapolis.”

BG: What is one of the craziest things you’ve done?

IW: “One year, Jalyn Duff and I watched ‘Pitch Perfect’ 17 times over Christmas break. It was when we had a big storm, and we were stuck in the house. It’s funny to look back at it now and think about how many times we watched that movie. I’m still not sick of it.”

BG: What is your greatest fear?

IW: “Bees and spiders. They are so gross. I just moved my room to the basement, and there are spiders down there. I just run to my dad and he takes care of it.”

BG: Is there any significance to your first name?

IW: “Not really. My middle name is LeeAnne, which is a combination of both of my parents’ middle names put together. My dad is a lineman for Duke Energy, and he was out on a call around when I was born. They were going to name me ‘Stormy’, and I’m really glad they didn’t.”

BG: What goals do you have for the rest of the year?

IW: “We would definitely like to win another volleyball sectional, and I think we can do it. I’m not sure about softball. Julia [Mundy] was our top pitcher, and she graduated, but we have Macy Clark this year and she’ll do really well. I moved to third base during last season, and Iiked that better.”
