EDINBURGH -- A Cloverdale man and a backseat passenger died late Monday night when the SUV he was driving was hit by a train.

The crash sent a third occupant of the vehicle to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation by Trooper Korry Clark indicated that a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Joshua L. Kelso, 30, Cloverdale, was traveling eastbound on County Road 900 North near County Road 250 East in Bartholomew County.

Troopers were called to the scene around 11:45 p.m.

Clark reported the vehicle disregarded a stop sign and entered a railroad crossing into the path of a southbound Louisville-Indiana Railroad train consisting of only two engines only.

The train collided with the driver's side of the SUV. The force pushed the Jeep down the tracks before it left the tracks and rolled over and came to a stop.

As a result of the collision, Kelso and a backseat passenger, Justice M. Llewellyn, 20, Franklin, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Bartholomew County Coroner's Office.

The front seat passenger, Myranda Akers, 26, was ejected from vehicle. She was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of serious injuries.

Akers is believed to be from the Edinburgh area, according to The Republic of Columbus.

Train engineer Jeremy R. Peacock, 35, Scottsburg, and conductor Leon A. Fuetini, 26, Shelbyville, Ky., were not injured in the collision.

State Police reported the investigation to be ongoing with toxicology results pending.
