Wilson breaks own course record, wins semistate by 11.6 seconds

SHELBYVILLE — Greencastle’s Emma Wilson won her final race at the Blue River Cross Country Course on Saturday in the Shelbyville Semistate, taking first for the second straight year.

Wilson’s winning time was 17:31.0, which was 12.4 seconds ahead of runnerup Phoebe Bates of Carmel.

Wilson shaved 13.4 seconds off her semistate-winning time of last year in a continued progression at the semistate level.

In 2016, she place seventh in a time of 17:59.3. As a freshman, the event was run at Carmel and Wilson placed third in 18:13.4.

“Emma ran well and looked great as she won the semistate,” Greencastle coach Craig Jordan said. “She did a good job of being patient and keeping things controlled while breaking her course record by 10.4 seconds.

“She’s feeling great and we’re excited to see what she’ll do in the upcoming weeks.”

Zionsville won the team title with 76 points, edging runnerup Brebeuf Prep by six points.

Two other Putnam County athletes competed in Saturday’s semistate.

Cloverdale sophomore Lily Monnett placed 113th among the 179 runners in the field with a time of 21:04.9.

On the boys’ side, South Putnam’s Austin Rumley finished 79th among the 178 runners with a time of 17:02.6 in his final high school meet.

Wilson will compete on Saturday in the state finals at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course east of Terre Haute, seeking to repeat her state title of last year.

The girls’ race begins at 1 p.m., and will be telecast online at ihsaatv.org.
