• At 5:20 p.m. Friday, Nickie Winslow, 42, Bainbridge, was arrested at the Walmart store on Indianapolis Road on theft charges along with a Hendricks County warrant for failure to appear in court on another theft charge.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Winslow was taken into custody by Capt. Chris Jones after allegedly trying to make off with $270 worth of merchandise, including clothing, jewelry and make-up.

Capt. Jones reported that Winslow used the Walmart self-checkout station and paid for four items. However, while in the changing room, she had allegedly tucked other items in between layers of clothing or into pockets of the clothing in an attempt to avoid paying for them.

• At 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Troy Martin, 20, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Kyle Lee on four charges at a residence in the 600 block of East Seminary Street.

Martin, who was lodged in the Putnam County Jail, was taken into custody on charges of violation of home detention, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a synthetic drug and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 3:42 a.m. Sunday, Joseph O’Conner, 48, Greencastle, was arrested near the intersection of Martinsville Street and Zinc Mill Road after reportedly leaving the scene of a property-damage accident. He was also charged with driving while being an habitual traffic violator when lodged in the Putnam County Jail by Officer Zach Rhine.

Capt. Charles Inman filed the accident report in the case, noting that O’Conner had been in an altercation at an East Street residence with his estranged girlfriend over ownership of a 2003 Chrysler 300M.

O’Conner reportedly took the vehicle and drove off, disregarding a stopsign at South Street and losing control of the car, which struck a concrete curb and left the roadway. The vehicle then struck some wooden steps and an unattended vehicle at 82 South St., Inman reported.

The suspect was reportedly seen fleeing the scene and then later acted as if he had just come upon the accident when the officers arrived, police said.

Total damage in the mishap was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated seven recent property-damage accidents.

• At 3 a.m. on Thursday, Christopher Ewing, 59, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 1000 South in a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox when he hit a deer.

Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 6:22 p.m. on Wednesday, Scott D. Cooksey, 49, Terre Haute, was stopped northbound on U.S. 231 waiting to turn left onto the westbound Interstate 70 entrance ramp in a 2007 International 4000. Rosalie E. Kean, 80, Cloverdale, was southbound on U.S. 231, approaching the intersection in a 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

Cooksey told Deputy Robert Soilleux he had the flashing amber left turn signal and entered the intersection. He said it appeared that Kean was going fast and did not slow down. Two witnesses in Cooksey’s vehicle said the light was yellow but not red and it did not look like the other vehicle had slowed down.

Kean told Soilleux she was southbound when the truck turned in front of her and she could not avoid hitting the passenger side rear of the vehicle. She said the light was turning yellow as the truck turned in front of her and she had not run the light.

Witnesses from another vehicle said the light had turned yellow at the time of the crash. These witnesses said Kean did not slow down and they speculated she had not seen the truck.

All people involved signed statements of release.

Kean’s vehicle was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Rebecca J. Arnold, 49, Fillmore, was westbound on County Road 50 South just past County Road 300 East in a 2018 Nissan Murano when she hit a deer.

Deputy Matt Biggs estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:25 p.m. on Monday, Rayman Snider, 84, Cloverdale, was turning off of County Road 900 South onto Main Street (U.S. 231) in Cloverdale in a 2007 Jeep Liberty.

Snider told Deputy Daniel Birt the light had turned yellow and he thought he had time to make the light if he hurried. He misjudged the turn and was unable to see road markings due to wed pavement and headlight glare.

The vehicle slid off the roadway and into the ditch.

The vehicle had to be retrieved from the ditch by a wrecker but was then driven from the scene. Birt estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 4:46 a.m. on Monday, Kaila James, 20, Cloverdale, was northbound on State Road 243 in a 2016 Toyota Corolla when she swerved to avoid a deer.

She then lost control and crashed head-on into a guardrail. James said the wet road caused her to lose control.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 11:32 p.m. on Saturday, David A. Roberts, 35, Cloverdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2010 Ford Focus when he clipped the head of a deer with the front passenger side of the car.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 5:22 p.m. on Saturday, Tiffany M. Emonds, 30, Indianapolis, was northbound on U.S. 231 approaching in the Brick Chapel area in a 2018 Nissan sedan.

Other motorists were stopped on 231 waiting for a vehicle to turn onto County Road 350 North.

Emonds told Deputy Birt she saw the stopped vehicles and began applying her brakes. However, she said that the brakes did not seem to be slowing her vehicle. But the time she was able to properly apply the brakes, it was too late.

Emonds’ car rear-ended a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Gilbert Herrera Jr., 26, Frankfort. The impact pushed Herrera’s car into a 2017 Dodge Ram driving by Mark S. Orrison, 59, Wheaton, Ill.

Both Emonds’ and Herrera’s cars had to be towed as a result of the crash. Orrison’s truck suffered only cosmetic damage.

None of the drivers were injured.

Birt estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.
