Bright and early Saturday, Nov. 17, the DePauw School of Music will welcome high school jazz ensembles to the DePauw campus for its Fourth Annual Jazz Festival. Five participating bands from the Bloomington and Lafayette areas will each give a 20-minute performance, followed by coaching sessions with this year’s clinicians.

Concerts — at 4 p.m. by the DePauw Jazz Ensemble, with guest percussionist and clinician, and at 7:30 p.m. by Green guest artists New York Voices — will top off the day.

Throughout the festival, the high school students will all have opportunities to perform for and be critiqued by White, who is heard regularly with the University of Northern Colorado Faculty Quartet and co-leads the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, a big band featuring many of the finest jazz musicians in the Northern Colorado area. While a student at the University of North Texas, White performed with the renowned “One O’Clock Lab Band” and in 1992, Maynard Ferguson recruited him for his “Big Bop Nouveau” band with which White recorded and toured internationally.

Following a full day of performances and clinics by the high school bands, White will take the stage for a 4 p.m. concert with the DePauw Jazz Ensemble led Steven Snyder, director of jazz ensembles at DePauw and this year’s festival coordinator. The afternoon concert will be in the Green Center for the Performing Art’s Moore Theatre.

Then New York Voices will close out the festival with a Green Guest Artist Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. Described by “All About Jazz” as “ unquestionably one of the finest singing ensembles ever assembled,” these Grammy Award-winning vocalists have refined their musical story to a high art. Known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend, their chameleon-like musicianship allows them to move seamlessly from setting to setting and serve as both headliners and master teachers for the School of Music’s JazzFest.

General admission for White’s performance on Saturday with the DePauw Jazz Ensemble is $5, and the evening concert with New York Voices is $20. Tickets for seniors, youth and all students are free.

Advance tickets may be obtained online at depauw.edu/music or at the venue’s box office, Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and beginning 90 minutes prior to each concert.
