Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage accidents.

• At 6:53 a.m. on Thursday, Robert J. Horrall, 26, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 at the Putnamville bridge in a 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer when he lost control on the ice-covered roadway.

The vehicle traveled left of center and spun around before striking the guardrail on the south side of the road.

The driver was uninjured and the vehicle was driven from the scene.

Sheriff Scott Stockton estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, Tyrone Merritt, 56, Ethel, Miss., was westbound on Interstate 70, just west of the 41-mile marker, in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma when he lost control due to ice on a bridge.

Lt. Donnie Pettit reported that Merritt’s vehicle spun in a clockwise rotation and hit the guardrail on the north side of the road. The trailer he was pulling also struck the guardrail, detaching from the vehicle and rolling onto its side.

The vehicle and trailer were towed. Pettit estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 4:02 p.m. on Monday, Brian T. Hester, 38, Ladoga, was northbound on U.S. 231 just north of State Road 236 crossing the Big Raccoon Creek bridge in a 2009 Ford F-250. Mark D. Harlan, 55, Greencastle, was southbound on 231, just north of the bridge in a 2010 Subaru Outlander.

Hester told Lt. Pettit that he lost control due to ice on the bridge. His vehicle veered to the left, crossing the southbound lane and hitting the inside wall of the bridge on the west side of the road.

Hester’s vehicle then rotated off the bridge to the northeast, back across the southbound lane into the northbound, where it was struck by Harlan’s vehicle. Hester’s truck then hit a guardrail on the east side of the road.

Harlan told Lt. Pettit that he veered left of center in an attempt to avoid Hester’s truck but could not.

Neither driver reported injuries. Both vehicles were towed.

Pettit, who was assisted at the scene by Deputy Matt Biggs, estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
