With black smoke rolling from a second-story room at Roban Apartments on Greencastle’s south side Thursday night, local firefighters were preparing for the worst.

Fortunately, the box alarm got plenty of personnel on the scene quickly and the fire was contained to a single apartment.

Firefighters were dispatched to the apartment complex located at 327 Bloomington St. at 9:34 p.m., bringing two Greencastle Fire Department engines, the tower truck and a service vehicle.

According to GFD Fire Chief John Burgess, 14 firefighters arrived on the scene to contain the flames.

GFD firefighters arrived at the apartments at about 9:38 p.m. Their quick response yielded quick results, as the fire was out at approximately 9:45 p.m.

The fire affected just one apartment, a second-story unit that is situated above the maintenance garage at the north end of the building.

Firefighters were on the scene until 11:25 p.m. dealing with the aftermath of the smoke damage and checking for additional signs of fire before returning to station.

The tower truck was utilized to scan the roof for further damage.

Multiple officers from the Greencastle Police Department and DePauw Public Safety were also on the scene, as was a Putnam County Operation Life ambulance.

Additionally, the Cloverdale Fire Department was dispatched to cover the Greencastle station while GFD handled the fire.

The fire and its cause are still under investigation at this time, however Burgess told the Banner Graphic damage was estimated at $50,000 to $70,000.

Roban Apartments, located just outside Robe-Ann Park, are owned and operated by Pedcor Management Corp., Indianapolis, which also has Round Barn Manor in Greencastle.
