NEW MARKET — Southmont’s wrestling team came away with a 63-12 victory over North Putnam at home Tuesday evening.

Winning by forfeit for the Mounties were: Clayton Downey (106), Ty Welliever (170), Jud Van Cleave (195) and Bayley Baumer (Heavyweight).

North Putnam’s Zack Parker earned a win by forfeit at 113 pounds in the loss.

Stepping onto the mat for the 120-pound match was Southmont’s Noah Benge facing off with Pete Sims of the Cougars. In the final seconds of the first round, Benge secured a takedown to go up 2-0. The score became moot 18 seconds into the second round, when the Mountie freshman finalized the pin for six points.

North Putnam answered back with a 5-2 decision win for Dylan Murphy over Takeshi Greiner at 126.

“We knew Southmont was going to be a tough team and match for us, especially without a full roster,” North Putnam head coach Michael Murphy said. “But, going against a team like this, especially with the sectional we’re in, prepares us for this season. Southmont has a lot of veteran wrestlers that have been to regional and semi-state matches, and this gives us a different look than we’re used to.”

Sophomore Dillan Lauy and senior Dimitrie Lauy notched back-to-back pins at 132 and 138 pounds respectively. Dillan pinned Doug O’Hair in 2:43, while Dimitrie picked up a pin by a reversal against Cam Hankins in just 1:30.

Jayden Williams followed that up with a stellar match at 145 pounds against Ben Pierce. The Cougar took the upper hand early, forcing the match to the outside of the mat. Just before the combatants went out of bounds, Williams found an opening and flipped his opponent over, securing the pinfall victory in just 37 seconds.

Southmont senior Michael Worth took Shawn McLaughlin to the full three rounds, but fell 13-7 in the decision at 152 pounds.

“That was the biggest match of the day for us,” Murphy said. “The 152 match was an absolute battle for Shawn and it came down to the final period. We struggled a bit today in the neutral position and definitely have to work on fighting from down bottom.”

Logan Benge pinned North’s Scott Proctor at 160 pounds in 2:27.

Riley Woodall claimed a pinfall victory at 182 pounds over North Putnam’s Dalton Kisner, and Zion Essex got a 6-2 win by decision over Tanner Louk.
