Friday, December 21, 2018

The DePauw men’s basketball team shot 61.5 percent from the field and placed five scorers in double figures in a 91-77 North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Allegheny Friday.

The Tigers improved to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC, while the Gators dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Tigers held a 30-24 lead with just under three minutes left in the first half and closed with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 39-26 at the intermission.

Allegheny quickly trimmed the gap to 40-37 in the first three minutes of the second half before the Tigers eventually pushed the lead back to 12 at 60-48 with 11:30 left.

The Gators were within seven at 63-56, but a pair of Aaron Shank buckets and a Nolan Ginther layup gave DePauw a 69-56 cushion and the Tigers kept the lead in double digits the remainder of the way.

Ken Decker led the Tigers with 16 points followed by Nick Felke with 13, Matthew Godfrey and Ginther with 12 each and Cole Jenkins with 10 along with a career-high seven assists.

Brian Roberts, Jr. and Caden Hinckley each scored 16 for Allegheny, while Zach Ecker added 15 and Jordan Rawls 11.

The Tigers hit 32 of 52 from the field including 12 of 26 from beyond the arc, while the Gators connected on 42 percent from the field and just 32.4 percent in the opening half. DePauw held a 32-31 edge on the boards as Luke Steinhart grabbed six. Hinckley paced Allegheny with eight.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, December 29, when it faces Otterbein at 5 p.m. in the opening game of the Tampa Bay Shootout, which the Tigers are hosting.
