COLUMBUS — A Greencastle man was arrested on numerous charges early Thursday morning after he fled from an Indiana State Trooper during an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Bartholomew County.

The incident began at 12:25 a.m. when Trooper Jacob Tolle observed a vehicle traveling southbound on I-65 near the 67-mile marker at a high rate of speed. Tolle caught up to the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle near the 65-mile marker.

The vehicle, being driven by 39-year-old Richard Romandine III fled southbound on I-65, continuing at high speeds.

The Pontiac, which was not properly registered, struck a tire deflation device placed by the Seymour Police Department near the 50-mile marker. The vehicle then came to a stop near the 47-mile marker in Jackson County.

Romandine exited the vehicle and was then taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Romandine was also found to have a suspended driver’s license.

Romandine was arrested at the scene and incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail on charges of resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, reckless driving, driving while suspended, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges are possible.

Trooper Tolle was assisted by other troopers from the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, officers with the Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Scott County Sheriff’s Department and Crothersville Police Department.

Here in Putnam County, Romandine has an extensive history of arrests on various theft, burglary, battery, resisting law enforcement, drug and traffic charges.
