City Police

Two recent traffic accidents were investigated by Greencastle City Police officers.

* At 10:26 a.m. Thursday, a two-vehicle accident occurred at State Road 240 and Percy Julian Drive, resulting in minor injuries to both drivers.

Officer Nick Eastham reported that Makaila A. Garner, 17, Cloverdale, was eastbound on 240, nearing its intersection with Percy Julian Drive when she turned her 2003 Dodge Durango left on a yellow arrow and into the path of a 2017 Ford Explorer, driven by Deborah Miller, 53, Fillmore. Miller was reportedly westbound with a green light.

Miller was transported to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance with neck and back pain.

Garner suffered knee pain and a scratch to her hand but declined medical treatment.

Total damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

* At 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, a two-car mishap was reported on Bloomington Street near East Washington Street.

Jennifer Hartman, 51, Greencastle, was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Cruze, slowing for the stoplight, while Judith Purvis, 71, Greencastle, was behind her, driving a 2006 Honda Accord.

Officer Darrel Bunten, who was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Ed Wilson, said Purvis was braking as well but looked away momentarily and was unable to stop in time to avoid a rear-end collision.

Total damage was listed at $1,000-$2,500.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County sheriff's deputies investigated three recent property-damage accidents.

* At 7:37 p.m. on Tuesday, McKenzie D. Shannon, 16, Fillmore, was traveling southwest on County Road 25 North near County Road 525 West in a 2011 Cadillac CTS when her vehicle slid on ice.

The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman said speed was likely a factor in the crash.

Freeman said Shannon provided a license, but it was suspended. She was issued a citation.

Two passengers in the car, Ilier A. Veseli, 16, Greencastle, and Jaylynn Pingleton, 15, Greencastle, complained of chest pain from seatbelts and airbags. They were both transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Shannon refused to answer questions regarding injuries, Freeman reported.

The vehicle sustained moderate front-end damage, driver side damage, a broken rear window and the airbags deployed. The vehicle was towed.

Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

* At 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Angela L. Grimes, 31, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 490 West, just north of U.S. 36 in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she hit a deer.

Deputy Brian Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

* At 10:25 a.m. on Saturday, Michael Baysinger, 65, Brazil, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 1998 Ford Ranger when he started to slide into the ditch on the west side of the road.

Baysinger told Deputy Tanner Brown he tried to correct but oversteered, entering the ditch on the east side of the road and hitting a fence.

Another vehicle stopped and pulled Baysinger's vehicle out of the ditch.

Brown estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to a Tuesday fire at a local nursing facility.

* At 11:51 p.m., GFD responded to a call for a hot smell at The Waters of Greencastle. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:59 to find that an industrial dryer had caught fire.

Those nearby were removed to another side of the building and sheltered in place.

The fire was logged as being under control at 12:30 a.m. and Operation Life transported some to be treated for smoke inhalation. The building was then ventilated.
