Learn about edge habitat and build your pasture restoration skills

Thursday, January 24, 2019

Purdue University Extension and University of Illinois Extension will host a Pasture Management Workshop at The Beef House Restaurant (16501 State Road 63, Covington) on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. EST (4:30 p.m. CST), and the presenters will begin following a Beef House dinner.

This year’s conference will consist of two presentations:

-- Management of Edge Habitats by Ryan Pankau, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

All plant communities have areas of transition between different habitat types. These habitat edges are interesting and dynamic areas that often require additional management considerations. The transition between pasture edges and woodlands are no different. Pankau will discuss the management of edge habitats to provide wildlife value and stimulate native plant communities.

-- From Overgrazed to a Full Bite, by Dr. Keith Johnson, professor of agronomy at Purdue University.

During this presentation, Johnson will examine how to evaluate a pasture in need of renovation and the steps to make improvements. Special focus will be on fertilization, weed control, forage selection and rotational stocking.

Cost of the program is $20 and includes dinner, payable online or at the door. Pre-register by Jan. 31 by calling 653-8411 or going online at go.illinois.edu/BiState.
