Greencastle Presbyterian welcomes author Mike Mather

Friday, February 1, 2019

Discussing what it means to have an “abundance” mindset in places of scarcity, pastor and author Mike Mather will visit Greencastle Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Mather will be speaking out his book, “Having Nothing, Possessing Everything: Finding Abundant Communities in Unexpected Places.”

Mather is the pastor of Broadway United Methodist Church in downtown Indy and has been doing community work in impoverished areas for most of his ministry.

In both South Bend and in inner-city Indianapolis, Mather has tried to shift the dynamic of seeing only the weaknesses in the neighborhood to lifting up and working with the strengths that are inherit in the neighborhood and its people.

“Mike and his church are doing some really incredible things, including beginning to access and utilize the gifts that are there in their community,” Greencastle Presbyterian Pastor Wes Kendall said.

In one story in the book, a woman came to Mather seeking financial assistance when he notice the unique hand-made handbag she was carrying. He wound up paying her to make purses.

In another story, someone from the church noticed a person singing out on the bus stop corner. That bus stop singer is now paid to sing at church funerals.

To top all this off, the church has also been dealing with a fire that displaced the congregation last year.

The event will begin with dinner in the church fellowship hall at 5:30 p.m. Mather will speak about his book and his ministry at 5:50 p.m.
