DePauw wins three of four weekend NCAC games

DePauw scored the final five points of the third quarter and the first eight of the fourth and pulled away from visiting Hiram for a 69-52 North Coast Athletic Conference win. The 20th-ranked Tiger women improved to 18-4 overall and 12-1 in the NCAC, while the Terriers dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-10 in conference play.

Hiram grabbed an early 9-4 lead, but DePauw scored eight of the next 11 for a 17-11 lead on the way to a 19-14 edge after one quarter. After the Terriers closed to within two, the Tigers expanded the lead to nine and led 32-25 at the intermission.

DePauw pushed the margin to 13 at 46-33 before Hiram was back within seven at 48-41 with two minutes remaining in the third. Maeve Summerville scored the Tigers’ next five points as DePauw led 53-41 as the teams headed to the fourth.

The Tigers scored the first eight of the final stanza to push the lead to 61-41 and Hiram got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

Maya Howard led DePauw with 17 points followed by Sydney Kopp with 14 and Claire Keefe with 10. Campbell Montgomery grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as the Tigers held a 44-25 edge on the boards and a 14-0 edge in second-chance points. Tashauna Wright led Hiram with 17 points and five assists with Madison Branch adding 10 points.

DePauw shot 42.2 percent from the field to Hiram’s 38.2 and the Tigers committed eight turnovers to the Terriers’ seven.

DePauw travels to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday for a 1 p.m. NCAC contest.

On Friday:

• DePauw 93, Allegheny 56 — DePauw shot 56.1 percent from the field and knocked in 11 of 19 3-pointers on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Allegheny.

DePauw jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and finished the opening quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 27-10 lead. The Tigers led by as many as 20 on two occasions in the second quarter before heading to the intermission with a 46-30 advantage.

Allegheny closed to within 11 at 51-40 with 6:58 remaining in the third, but DePauw put together a 17-2 stretch to extend the lead 68-42. In the fourth, the Gators were back within 19 before DePauw wrapped up the contest on a 22-4 run.

Maya Howard led five DePauw double-figure scorers with 19 points and handed out a game-high seven assists, while Sydney Kopp added 15 and Mya Shannon 13. Claire Keefe added 11 and Maeve Summerville matched a career high with 10. Julianna Skowron paced Allegheny with 15 and Zoe Soilis finished with 12. Campbell Montgomery grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers who held a 33-26 edge on the boards. Skowron hauled down seven for the Gators.

DePauw shot 56.1 percent for the game to Allegheny’s 39.6 percent and the Tigers committed 10 turnovers to the Gators’ 24.

Men’s games

• DePauw 84, Allegheny 69 — At Meadville, Pa., DePauw put together a 19-5 run to pull away from the Gators.

The Tigers moved to 14-7 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC, while the Gators dropped to 8-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play.

DePauw got out to a quick start as Nick Felke hit two 3-pointers and a layup to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead. Allegheny briefly held a 2-point lead, but DePauw took a 35-32 lead into the halftime.

The hosts were within three at 61-58 with seven minutes left before Matt Mahlke hit a three and Cole Jenkins followed with a layup. The Gators hit a pair of free throws, but DePauw responded with a layup by Caymn Lutz and back-to-back buckets from Felke to make it 72-60 with 3:40 left. Nolan Ginther’s three-point play with 1:38 remaining gave the Tigers a 77-63 lead and DePauw hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Felke matched a career high with 20 points, while Ginther followed with 14. Jenkins, Lutz and Aaron Shank each added 11. Andrew Kus hauled down eight rebounds.

Jordan Rawls paced Allegheny with 21 points with Brian Roberts added 16. Caden Hinckley recorded a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

DePauw connected on 53.2 percent from the floor including 60 percent in the second half, while the Gators hit 37.8 percent. The Tigers knocked in 8 of 23 3-points with Allegheny finishing 2 of 21 from beyond the arc.

Allegheny had a narrow 40-38 edge on the boards and each team committed nine turnovers.

DePauw hosts Wabash at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

On Friday:

• Hiram 82, DePauw 64 — At Hiram, Ohio, Hiram shot 51.5 percent from the floor and outrebounded DePauw 47-28 on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Tigers.

The Terriers led at the half, 41-24, before DePauw was back to within 12 at 52-40 with 13:13 left.

Hiram scored the next nine and DePauw got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Matt Mahlke scored a career-high 15 points and Nolan Ginther also added 15 in the loss. Sherman Dean III led Hiram with 32 points. McQueen added 11 rebounds in the win.
