GMS vocal, piano students earn honors at ISSMA contest

On Saturday, Feb. 2, Greencastle Middle School vocal and piano students competed in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble competition at Terre Haute North High School.

The students spent many hours preparing a solo or ensemble piece and performed before a highly qualified judge.

There are five different groups that a student could enter in from Group V (easier music) to Group I (very difficult). Each solo and ensemble is graded in several different categories including intonation, tone quality, note and rhythm accuracy, interpretation, dynamics and musicianship. Points are awarded and final ratings given from gold to participation.

The results are as follows:

Group V – Gold Division: Ali Dobbs – piano solo; Addie Fowler – piano solo; Liz Kavanaugh – vocal solo; Emma Allison – vocal solo; Emily Gray – vocal solo; Emma Allison, Lily Barger and Paxton O’Brien – vocal ensemble; Quinn Asbell, Evie Green, Sabina Seaman and Emily Gray – vocal ensemble; Kamorah Stampley, Emma Callahan, Liz Kavanaugh, and Journey Wilson – vocal ensemble.

Group V – Silver Division: Taylor Ridgway, Sydney Shrewsbury, Lauren Dibble, Liz Rohder, Danielle Stoelting and Donna Wait – vocal ensemble.

Group IV – Gold Division: Gwyneth Stevens – piano solo; Noah Barnes – vocal solo; Micah Cantonwine – vocal solo; Micah Cantonwine, Reid Lawrence, Logan Warren and Joseph Hale – vocal ensemble; Carly Simmons, Lindy Watson, Meredith Ball, Emilee Jordan, Elizabeth Huff, Emily Huff and Dhanali Kantilal – vocal ensemble; Sammie McCoy, Maddie McCoy, Eleanor Mackenzie, Daniel Johnston and William Johnston – vocal ensemble; Allie Purdue, Alice Howard, Rebecca Hebb, Maria Serapio, Jadyn Wadler, Katrina Schwab and Trinity Bean – vocal ensemble; Mya Weddle, Aleyce Green, Savannah Black and Bella Green – vocal ensemble.

Group III – Gold Division: Hunter Miller – piano solo; Andrew Adams – piano solo; Clay Glessner – piano solo; Sabina Seaman – piano solo; Savannah Black – vocal solo; Collin Short – vocal solo; Bella Green – vocal solo.

Group I – Gold Division: Alice Howard – vocal solo; Hannah Seaman – vocal solo.

In addition, Alice Howard and Hannah Seaman will be competing in the State ISSMA contest later in February by virtue of their gold division rating at the district level.

Sabina Seaman, Hunter Miller and Clay Glessner are students of Maureen Carkeek.

Addie Fowler is a student of Cheryl Beck.

Ali Dobbs, Andrew Adams and Gwyneth Stevens are students of Lori Miller.

Alice Howard and Hannah Seaman are students of Barbara Pare.
