South Putnam ambassadors and administrators are inviting the community to attend an upcoming student-centered event focusing on innovative teaching and learning practices. It will also feature an education consultant from Finland who has worked with educators throughout the world.

The Education Beyond Boundaries event on Wednesday, Feb. 27 will showcase presentations by South Putnam ambassadors, teachers and outside organizations which will revolve around hands-on activities across a variety of subjects, as well as partnerships benefiting South Putnam students.

Petteri Elo

After the presentations, attendees will be invited to hear a keynote lecture by Petteri Elo, a renowned Finnish educator who has extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development.

Elo will emphasize incorporating different practices into the classroom which stress critical thinking and holistic student interaction.

Elo has worked with school systems in Virginia, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Colorado and Florida, and his visit to South Putnam is one of his first in Indiana. In his native Finland, he has worked for the Helsinki Education Department as a consultant while serving as a classroom teacher.

The event is scheduled for Feb. 27 at South Putnam High School, with the presentations beginning at 6 p.m. Elo’s lecture will then start at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Attendees will also have a chance to win several door prizes at the conclusion of the event, including a 32-inch HD SmartTV, an Apple iPad and Beats wireless earphones.

South Putnam’s featured partners for the event are the Lilly Endowment and EF Educational Tours. EF has continually partnered with South Putnam Schools to offer students the opportunity to travel outside Putnam County. The organization has sponsored eighth-grade trips to Washington, D.C., a domestic travel program for freshmen and sophomores and an international program for juniors and seniors.
