CLOVERDALE — For the second straight year, the Cloverdale High School winterguard will be competing in the semi finals of the Indiana High School Color Guard Association state competition.

Most remarkable for the Clovers? They’re competing — and excelling — at the varsity level, even if many team members aren’t exactly “varsity” in age.

“The amount of work this group has put in over the past two years is quite impressive,” director Angela Raisor said. “We have four middle school students, two freshmen and no seniors this year.“

The lack of senior leadership was the same last year, and yet the Clovers keep succeeding.

“To advance a program that had never been there to semi-state two years in row with no seniors is no easy task,” Raisor said.

At the recent regional competition at Northview High School, Cloverdale advanced by finishing second to West Vigo in the varsity contest.

Raisor said the team isn’t simply feasting on weak competition.

“They have done it at a time that the circuit is improving as well,” she said. “This is the toughest this class has ever been and Indiana groups have taken two of the top three spots at the national finals for the last few years.”

The IHSCGA Regional A Semi-finals are set for Saturday at Mooresville High School, with performances to begin at 11 a.m.

The Cloverdale squad will perform at 2:23 p.m.

Additionally, the Cloverdale junior varsity is set for state level competition at Center Grove High School.

This event will commence at 10 a.m., with Cloverdale to perform at 12:34 p.m.

For each event, admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and senior citizens and $3 for children under five.
