INDIANAPOLIS — Staying in business for 100 years is impressive enough.

Keeping that business in the family for the entire 100 years? Now that’s really something.

Still bearing the family name of founder Clyde Cash and still boasting a Cash as the president and another as the vice president, Cash Concrete Products accepted the Governor’s Century Business Award from Gov. Eric Holcomb on Thursday.

President Tim Cash and his cousin, Vice President Neal Cash, made the trip to the Statehouse to receive the award.

“The neatest thing, probably, is there are a lot of them out there that make it that far, but there’s not a lot that are family-owned,” Tim Cash said.

Indeed, 65 businesses were honored by Holcomb were honored at the Statehouse with the Governor’s Century and Half Century Business Award, but it’s unclear how many share Cash’s story of continuous family ownership.

“We’re up to the fifth generation,” Tim said. “I’m fourth, my cousin Neal is fourth and my son Cameron works in here with us and he’s fifth generation.”

Tim is humble about his part in the history of the business, noting that he’s “only” worked there for three decades or so.

“I’ve only worked here for 30-some years,” he said, “so someone else has a lot more to do with it.”

Cash Concrete Products is actually celebrating its 101st anniversary in 2019, as it was founded by Clyde Cash in 1918. It has remained family-owned and operated while providing quality building materials like ready-mix concrete, concrete block, brick, stone veneer and other supplies for commercial, farm, industrial and residential uses.

Tim points out, though, that others can provide the products, but customer service is what keeps the business going.

“It’s about treating people like you would want to be treated,” he said. “When it comes down to it, we’re a customer-service industry. We’re a commodity business and so are other people. People do have choices.”

Neal Cash agrees, and credits the community and employees with much of Cash Concrete’s success.

“This community has been a big part of it and good guys that work for us,” Neal said. “A combination of those things with loyal customers. We’ve had a really good group of loyal customers that have help us put all those things together for 100 years.”

Tim added that being a family-owned company has helped Cash remain responsive to its customers without a lot of the red tape of a bigger entity.

“We’re not corporate like huge companies, so we can make decisions based on our gut that a larger corporation would have to go on and on and on to change something.”

He also enjoyed meeting with the governor, whom he found “down-to-earth and fun to talk to.”

“Today we honor businesses that have helped lay a foundation for economic success in Indiana, maintaining operations for more than 50 to 100 years and creating long-term career opportunities for Hoosiers,” Holcomb said. “Through a strong dedication to their employees, their businesses and their communities, these companies exemplify the pioneering spirit and perseverance that will push our state forward for years to come.”

The Cashes were just happy to be a part of it.

“I’m pretty humbled that we were able to do it,” Tim said. “It’s pretty awesome.”

  • Cash has always been good for the free or reduced cement that I have asked for, over the years, on community projects. Loyalty works two ways. We both know that.

    Thanks
