The family of Richard “Dick” Sunkel announces his peaceful passing on the morning of Friday, March 29, 2019.

He was born to Willard and Louise Sunkel on Oct. 11, 1931 and was raised in Greencastle.

Richard studied business at Miami University in Ohio and was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

He met Sally (nee Elrod) at the Windy Hill Country Club and they were happily married on July 11, 1959 at Sally’s family farmhouse.

Richard was a successful business owner and retailer at the Horace Link & Company furniture store. As a lifelong resident of Greencastle, he was heavily involved in the community. Notably, he served as the president at Windy Hill Country Club, director at First Citizens Bank and director at Asbury Towers. He was an active member at Gobin United Methodist Church.

Richard was an avid golfer and had a passion for reading. He enjoyed reminiscing and sharing stories from his many travels with his wife. Richard lived a full life, to the age of 87, that was filled with love and laughter, although he never did get his hole-in-one. He will be remembered for his kind spirit and sweet voice.

Saddened by their loss and cherishing fond memories are his wife of 59 years, Sally; youngest son, Doug; daughters-in-law Marsha and Helen; siblings, Arthur and Anne; and grandchildren Gwen, Maggie, Ben, Claire, Rich and Scotlyn.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; eldest son, Dan; and many beloved friends.

Services include a public visitation at 1 p.m. and ceremony to follow at 2 p.m. at Gobin United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 2. In lieu of flowers, send memorial gifts to the Putnam County Community Foundation.
