Changes to Humane Society spay/neuter program announced

Monday, April 1, 2019

As part of its mission to improve and protect the lives of animals in Putnam County, the Humane Society of Putnam County (HSPC) launched a community Spay/Neuter Assistance Program in May 2015.

The program allows a Putnam County family, without any restrictions or requirements, to obtain spay/neuter vouchers for two pets (cats or dogs) per year. Vouchers can be redeemed at Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic, 409 N. Green St., Brownsburg, to cover the full cost of a spay or neutering. If pet owners prefer to stay local, a list of local veterinarians who accept our vouchers is listed on the back.

Locally, HSPC will pay $100 toward a spay/neuter surgical procedure. If the vouchers are used locally the pet owner will be responsible for any amount over $100 charged by the veterinarian. The vouchers will also cover up to $20 of the cost to bring an animal up to date on its rabies vaccine.

Spay and neuter programs are considered the most effective way to address dog and cat overpopulation by reducing the number of kittens and puppies that might otherwise end up homeless or at local animal shelters.

Since its inception, the Humane Society of Putnam County's program has paid to spay/neuter 818 dogs and 1,170 cats at a cost of more than $86,900. The majority of these funds have come from Rescued Treasures, a thrift shop owned and operated by the HSPC. Additional funding also comes from generous donations from the community.

Rescued Treasures is staffed entirely by volunteers. If you would like to volunteer at either Rescued Treasures or the animal shelter, call 720-3236.

Vouchers are available at Rescued Treasures the first Friday and Saturday of each month, beginning Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6..

  • We picked one up last month and there were NO local vets listed on the back. It listed the low cost vet in Danville only.

  • Please bring your voucher back to Rescued Treasures and we will give you the list of local vets. We are sorry for any confusion.

  • This is such a wonderful program and the people who work at Rescued Treasures are Angels to give their time to such a worthy cause. We have tried to help with donations of household items over the years because this program was a blessing when a dumped dog was left for us to care for! Thank you for this service and helping the helpless fuzzy friends of Putnam County.
