A one-car accident blamed on a loose dog knocked out power to a neighborhood on Greencastle’s northeast side for more than six hours Monday night.

Greencastle City Police reported that Joyce Dixon-Fyle, 65, Greencastle, lost control of her 2000 Volvo about 7 p.m. when a dog ran out in front of her as she drove along North Arlington Street, just south of Highwood Avenue.

When Dixon-Fyle swerved to miss the animal, her car left the roadway, striking a Duke Energy pole on the east side of Arlington Street and snapping it in half, Sgt. Eric Vaughan reported.

The car then careened across Arlington Street, striking a chain link fence at 621 Ridge Ave.

Dixon-Fyle sustained lacerations to her cheek, nose and tongue, police said, and was transported via Operation Life ambulance to Putnam County Hospital.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Duke Energy reported that 52 customers in the neighborhood of Highwood and Arlington lost power for more than six-and-a-half hours after the accident. Power was finally restored to those homes at 1:43 a.m., Duke reported.

Comcast cable television subscribers and internet customers in the vicinity also lost service following the accident, which closed North Arlington Street to through traffic until nearly 2 a.m. as utility trucks worked to restore service.
