Monday, May 13, 2019

Greencastle Township Trustee Steve Butts and his advisory board will make one of their two appointments to the Greencastle Community Schools Board of Trustees in early June.

The four-year term in question, the seat currently filled by Mike White, will commence on July 1, 2019 and continue until June 30, 2023.

Interested applicants may pick up an applications and guidelines from Butts at 620 Tennessee St., or by calling the office at 653-5918.

Completed applications will be accepted until May 29, 2019.

Butts and the township advisory board, consisting of Karen Ambler, Marilyn Clearwaters and Russ Evans, will interview potential candidates on June 10 at the township trustee office. Interviews will be open to the public.

Interested candidates must reside within Greencastle Township.

If White wishes to continue, he must make application the same as any other interested party.

White has served on the board for eight years, having been appointed by the township in 2011.

The seat is one of two representing Greencastle Township on the appointed school board. The other Greencastle Township appointee is Bill Tobin, whose term expires June 30, 2020.

Other members of the appointed GCSC board include Dale Piece, appointed by Madison Township Advisory Board, and Lisa McCoy and Brian Cox, both filling Greencastle City Council appointments.

  • I still don't understand why Greencastle doesn't elect their school board members instead of being appointed.

  • Greencastle is one of the few school corporations that have an appointed school board. I think someone with knowledge of how to go about getting this changed to an elected board (elected by the voters of Greencastle) needs to take the bull bythe horns and get this done. It has to be done by someone who knows how to get all the T's crossed and the I's dotted. Someone tried several years ago to get Greencastle School Board changed to an elected board but they forgot their I's and T's.

  • Someone previously stated that the school board had to vote to make it an elected board. Not sure if that is true, but if so, it’s unlikely to happen.
