Putnamville officer charged with trafficking
PUTNAMVILLE -- A 25-year-old Putnamville Correctional Facility (PCF) officer is facing two felony counts of trafficking with an inmate following a recent arrest at the prison facility.
Michael Anthony Miller of Plainfield is being held in the Putnam County Jail on charges of trafficking with an inmate involving a controlled substance and conspiracy to commit trafficking of a controlled substance. Both are Level 5 felonies that are punishable by 1-6 years in prison.
Miller was arrested on May 9 after admitting to bringing a package he believed contained Suboxone, a drug used to treat opioid addiction, into the facility.
Miller reportedly had communicated with former offender Brandon Cooper who had been released in February 2019, court documents state.
The probable cause affidavit notes that “Miller agreed to pick up a package containing an unknown amount of Suboxone from Cooper and traffic it into the facility.”
The defendant was reportedly to be paid $2,000 for bringing in the drug and delivering it to offender Kevin Elmore.
Miller admitted taping the package to his groin area, enabling him to pass a security pat down.
An Indiana Department of Correction spokesman said Miller has been dismissed from DOC employment.
“Putnamville Correctional Facility has a zero-tolerance policy for this type of misconduct,” Warden Brian Smith said in a statement. “Anyone found trafficking will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Miller has made an initial appearance in Putnam Superior Court.
