PCSD post produces jokes ’til the cows come home

Having broken free from the monotony of pasture life, cattle Ace (left) and Taco instead soak in the tedium of a Tuesday evening at the Cloverdale BP car wash. The two animals wandered 2.5 miles from their home before they were spotted loitering at the gas station near Interstate 70.

CLOVERDALE — When a police call comes with a healthy dose of levity (not to mention calcium, protein and vitamin D) you have to milk it for all it’s worth.

That’s what has been happening on Facebook since the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department posted Wednesday evening about an “udderly ridiculous” call deputies responded to earlier in the week.

Deputies spent part of Tuesday night responding to a problem they had not seen previously — cows hanging out at a local car wash.

Aside from the job of getting the animals to a safe spot for the night, Deputy Bobby Boyd of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department takes a moment to enjoy a truly unique call and snaps a selfie with Ace and Taco, two cattle spotted loitering at the Cloverdale BP Tuesday evening.

The post tells of how night shift deputies responded to a call of “suspicious cows hanging out at a local gas station,” later identified as the Cloverdale BP.

“The cows were seen hanging out, blocking the lane to the car wash and refusing to leave,” the PCSD posted noted. “To top it all off, they didn’t even purchase anything. #Rude!!”

In response, Deputy Bobby Boyd “took the cows into custody and was able to return them ot their owner.”

There are no charges at this time, the post assures, “just another day in rural Indiana law enforcement.”

While the sheriff’s department got the ball rolling with the “udderly ridiculous” pun near the end of the post, that was only the beginning. A stampede of comments followed the post — more than 200 as of noon on Thursday — many taking the opportunity to make a good (or bad) bovine pun.

“When we took the cows into custody they asked why,” PCSD added shortly after the original post. “We told them ‘it’s pasture curfew.’”

Other puns offered by PCSD and its followers included “cowmmunity,” “cudstody,” “all a big missed steak” and various plays on “moove” including getting them for “a mooving violation” and “moove it along boys, nothing to see here.”

One user asked if the cows were transporting grass and meth in them, while yet another opined that it was “good no one tipped the cows that you were coming.”

When one user offered that it sounded “like a bunch of bull,” another soon called him out, saying she had “herd” better jokes.

Even the owner of the cows got in on the fun.

“I would like to publicly admit my guilt,” Eric Kaufman wrote. “If any property damage or any other violations happened, please let me know.”

He went on to thank a nearby landowner who took care of the cattle overnight.

“We live 2.5 miles away from the BP,” Kaufman said. “I owe you guys big time!”

Kaufman also indentified the two animals, saying the shorthorn is named Ace, while the Holstein is Taco. It’s probably fortunate for the Holstein that they didn’t wander a bit farther south, with the local Taco Bell less than a block away.

“I’m glad they had a night out,” Kaufman wrote. “They really do love the city life.”

There’s also no word on why the cows were loitering near a car wash when they could have sought better accomodations at the hotel just up the hill.

Then they might be saying, “No, we aren’t the Chick-Fil-A cows, but we did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”
