Brazil Concert Band sets opening night June 2

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, now in its 161st year of continuous music making, will present “Opening Night 2019” in Forest Park, rain or shine, Sunday, June 2 at 8 p.m.

The BCB with Director Matthew S. Huber will offer a wide variety of music from classic band literature, Broadway gems and those ever-popular marches by John Philip Sousa and Karl L. King.

The BCB will observe the 75th anniversary of D-Day which will occur June 6 with “The Rose, Shamrock and Thistle” by Sousa to honor our Allies from the United Kingdom and “Armed Forces Salute” arranged by Bob Lowden, featuring the songs of America’s armed forces.

From the year 1911, the BCB will perform the band classic “Second Suite in F for Military Band” by British composer Gustav Holst. All four movements including 1. March, 2. Song Without Words, 3. Song of the Blacksmith and 4. Fantasia on the Dargason will be presented.

Just purchased by the BCB for opening night is “William Tell Overture” by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868). This world-class opera was first produced in Paris in 1829. The four movements of the overture are among the best-known themes worldwide.

Soloists include Shelley Criss on flute and Julie Dugger on English horn.

Selections from “The Phantom Of The Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber will be the Broadway musical of the week with its songs “Think of Me,” “Angel of Music,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “All I Ask Of You,” “The Point Of No Return” and “The Music Of The Night.”

Rounding out this week’s show are “King Cotton” and “Right-Left March” both by J.P. Sousa, “Western Dance” by Clare Grundman and “Circus Days” by K. L. King.

The Brazil Concert Band performs each and every Sunday evening in Forest Park throughout June, July and August.
