Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:40 p.m. on Monday, Adrianna P. Tumey, 24, Rockville, was westbound on U.S. 36 just west of County Road 475 East in a 2015 GMC Terrain when she hit a deer.

The vehicle was towed. Deputy Markus Witt estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 5:05 p.m. on Monday, John E. Sanders, 68, Coatesville, was eastbound on County Road 75 North just east of County Road 225 East in a 2007 Cadillac CTS.

Sanders told Deputy Randy Patrick he had a coughing attack that caused him to leave the road, hitting a highway sign.

Damage to the vehicle was minimal.

Deputy Patrick estimated total damage at less than $1,000.

• At 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, LaDonna Berry, 65, Roachdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 just south of County Road 800 South in a 2015 Honda CRV. Lewis Funk, 47, Poland, was also northbound in a 1997 Chevrolet S-10.

The accident took place in the area north of Interstate 70, where the two northbound lanes merge into one.

Berry told Deputy Kyle Lee she was northbound on U.S. 231 in the right lane, preparing to merge into the left lane due to her lane ending. As Berry began to merge, she said the truck began to parallel her speed, then sped up, blocking her from merging.

Berry said this ultimately caused her to lock her brakes, forcing her to the shoulder. Before Berry was forced to the shoulder, the two vehicles made contact.

LaDonna Berry’s husband David Berry gave the same account of what happened before the collision.

Funk was adamant in telling Lee that he maintained his lane and speed and that Berry hit his truck as she was trying to pass on the right.

Noting “do not pass” and “merge left” signs, as well as skid marks behind Berry’s vehicle consistent with her statement, Lee issued a citation to Funk for disobeying a traffic control device for not allowing Berry to merge.

Lee estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.
