The grand finale presented by Mortonville Fireworks wasn’t the only thing that went boom during the annual Celebrate 4 Independence Day festivities at Robe-Ann Park, as members of the Indiana National Guard from the Greencastle Armory set up a 105-mm ceremonial howitzer set to be fired during the national anthem preceding the fireworks display.

It wasn’t all the rocket’s red glare or bombs bursting in air on Thursday, as athletes started the day with competitions, such as Tim Whiteman of Danville (above) returning a serve in the pickleball tournament and a happy runner (below) completing the Mike Rokicki Memorial 5K.

Later in the day, the celebration included James and Paul Champion reading the Declaration of Independence before the bandshell gave way to live entertainment, such as Dreadful Greta (below).
