Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, Doreen A. Workman, 47, Greencastle, was eastbound on U.S. 36 just east of U.S. 231 in a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. William C. Spears, 36, Bainbridge, was also eastbound in a 1999 Ford F-350.

Workman was preparing to turn into the Life Spring Church. She told Deputy Matt Biggs she was slowing and had her turn signal activated. Spears told Biggs the car was stopped and had no turn signal activated.

Spears said he hit the rear-end of Workman’s vehicle at approximately 20 mph.

The vehicles were moved prior to the arrival of Biggs or Bainbridge Deputy Marshal Jes Seipel so officers could not verify the status of the turn signal.

Workman had two small children in the car and they were transported from the scene by Operation Life for precautionary purposes.

Workman’s vehicle was towed. Spears’ truck was parked in the church parking lot and he said he would call someone to remove it.

Biggs estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Deputy Daniel Birt was dispatched to Heritage Lake for a report of a single-vehicle crash from which the driver had fled.

The driver had left the side of the road, hitting the Lincoln Hills sign owned by the Heritage Lake Property Owners Association. The vehicle continued off road, driving into a culvert pipe surrounded by large limestone rocks. The impact caused significant damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle.

A large amount of motor oil was also dumped onto the nearby driveway of the caller. The driveway was also covered in various sizes of stone from the end of the driveway surrounding the culvert.

Motor oil could be observed on the road and was followed for several miles, but the vehicle could not be located that night.

The husband of the reporting party located a silver Ford Freestar being loaded onto a wrecker north of Fillmore.

The following day, a reserve deputy called several local wrecker services. The owner of Jerry’s Wrecker said he had been contacted to pick up a silver van in the area and to take it to 2777 S. CR 150 West, Greencastle. He had been advised the vehicle was having mechanical issues and would be along the side of the road with flashers on.

The vehicle, a 2006 Ford Freestar registered to Daniel A. Glaze, Greencastle, was located at the address.

Officers also spoke to Jacob T. Wright, 28, Greencastle, who said he was the driver and gave a voluntary statement regarding the incident. He said he had been in an argument with his girlfriend prior to the crash and left angry.

As of Monday evening, no charges had been filed in the incident.

Birt estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
