Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes

• At 7:50 a.m. on Thursday, Robert W. Blue, 68, Reelsville, was exiting the Mobil gas station on the northwest corner of U.S. 231 and U.S. 40, attempting to turn north onto U.S. 231 in a 2003 Ford F-150.

Blue told Deputy Matt Biggs that southbound traffic was stopped at the light, which he believed would allow for him to cross into the northbound lane.

However, Emma D. Hendrickson, 17, Greencastle, was southbound in the left turn lane of U.S. 231 in a 2014 Hyundai Sonata and was obstructed from Blue’s view by the stopped traffic.

As Blue attempted to cross over, Hendrickson hit the driver’s side of his truck.

The crash caused only minor damage to Hendrickson’s vehicle and no visible damage to Blue’s.

Both were driven from the scene. Biggs estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 11:44 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, Joshua S. Hunter, 18, Cloverdale, was traveling Southbound on County Road 300 West in a 2006 Pontiac G6.

Deputy Anthony Brown said the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed, as it left 225 feet of skid marks before going airborne across County Road 100 South for approximately 40 feet. It then made ground contact and traveled another 30-40 feet before hitting a tree.

Hunter and his three passengers — Shelby R. Pipes, 16, Poland; Hailey R. Whitis, 17, Greencastle; and Alex N. Finley, 15, city unknown — were transported to various hospital for their injuries.

The vehicle was towed. Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to two recent dispatches:

• At 10:01 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to 301 E. Seminary St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:04 to find that a toilet had overflowed and leaked into a detector head. GFD was unable to reset the alarm, but maintenance came to address the issue. GFD left at 10:14 p.m.

• At 3:52 a.m. on Friday, GFD was initially called to assist the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department with a structure fire at 54 W. Logan St. in Cloverdale. However, CTVD then advised GFD to cover their station. The fire could not be found, and GFD went back into service at 4:31 a.m.

Additionally, GFD performed two medical assists between the first dispatch.
