Betty Jean Hurst, 91, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully at Life’s Journey of Avon on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019.

Betty was born to Noble Allee and Mary (Hill) Allee at home on their farm near Mt. Meridian. She had wonderful memories of good times growing up with her older brother and two older sisters.

She considered herself blessed with two sons who had been her caregivers the last few years, and a granddaughter, great-grandson and great-granddaughter.

She graduated from Belle Union High School and worked hard on the all-purpose farm until after her sons left home for college. She then began her “away from home” working career, which included Eitel’s Flowers, Hillman Jewelry, Montgomery Ward and for 26 years the cashier and bookkeeper at Horace Link Furniture until it closed in 1997.

She was a member of the Coatesville Missionary Baptist Church where she shared her deep faith with her sister Ruby. She was a long-time member of the Good Cheer Club, of which her mother was a charter member.

Betty was loved and respected by her family and friends. She was smart with an encyclopedic memory of events and conversations and a stickler for detail. She was hard-working, dependable and consistent. She had a “tell it like it is, no filter” honesty, an “anything worth doing is worth doing well” work ethic and “if you’re not 15 minutes early you’re late” promptness. She remembered everyone’s birthday.

She is survived by her sons Stan and Steve (Phyllis Hayman); sister Ruby Neier; granddaughter Jayme Barber; great-grandson Kevin Polster; great-granddaughter Kaitlyn Barber; nieces Judy Crosby (John), Sharon Salsman (Larry), Micalene Walton (Donald), Anne McGee (Max) and Judith Ann Allee (Ronald); nephews Gary Allee (Sharon), Noble Neier (Sue) and Russell Neier (Cheryl); as well as many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother FM Allee, sister-in-law Alice Allee, sister Helen Sinclair, brothers-in-law Wayne Sinclair and Malcom Neier, nephews Ronald Allee, Tim Allee and Jonathan Sinclair, great-nephew David Salsman and great-niece Rhona Allee.

Graveside services for Betty will be at 11 a.m. on Monday Aug. 26 at Cloverdale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale.
