Open Door Law session set Saturday

Monday, September 16, 2019

Math teachers have taught us that it is important to not only have the answer to the problem but that we also need to “show our work.” This is also true for our government officials.

Jared Jernagan

The public has the right to watch elected and appointed officials receive and discuss information and come to a decision. The Open Door Law is the textbook that our elected and appointed officials must use when they conduct their business.

“Understanding the Open Door Law: A Tutorial,” the September Community Conversation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Putnam County Public Library.

Jared Jernagan, assistant editor of the Banner Graphic, and Leslie Hanson, president of the League of Women Voters, are the featured speakers.

Jared Jernagan grew up in a newspaper office, as his mother was a longtime employee of his hometown paper. At Wabash College he studied English, political science and pretty much anything but journalism. He graduated in 2003 and briefly tried climbing the corporate ladder. He soon realized the folly of his ways and went to work at that same hometown paper, even briefly serving as his mom’s boss.

Leslie Hanson

Jernagan has been with the Banner Graphic since 2007, first as sports editor, and assistant editor since November 2008. In that time, he’s covered pretty much every public board, council and commission in Putnam County at some point.

Leslie Hanson is the president of the Greencastle League of Women Voters and has been an advocate of the Open Door Law and government transparency for more than 30 years. She grew up in a family that taught her that we all have a responsibility to be active members of our local community.

This Community Conversation is sponsored by the Greencastle League of Women Voters, the Banner Graphic, the Putnam County Public Library and the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.
