Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County Deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:50 a.m. on Sunday, Jose A. Palacios, 18, Indianapolis, was westbound on State Road 240 about a half mile east of County Road 525 East in a 2006 Honda Accord.

The car began to leave the right side of the road, where there is a steep ditch. However, Palacios overcorrected, causing the vehicle to fishtail and leave the right side of the road again.

The vehicle overturned and rolled several times.

Palacios told Deputy Matt Biggs he believed the axle broke, causing the original problem. However, Biggs found no evidence of damage prior to the accident. The deputy noted there was a bend in the road at the location.

Both Palacios and his passenger, Toral Hernandez of Indianapolis, were transported by Operation Life to Methodist Hospital for their injuries.

The car was towed. Biggs estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:47 p.m. on Friday, Robert Bowles, 48, Cloverdale, was westbound on County Road 1000 South in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado.

Bowles told Deputy Robert Soilleux he was searching for his wallet when a deer ran out in front of the truck.

The deer crossed the center line and ran off the road, hitting a utility pole. The impact sheared off the utility pole, with the vehicle coming to rest on top of it.

Bowles was trapped in the vehicle and transported from the scene for his injuries.

Soilleux said Bowles smelled of an alcoholic beverage. The driver told him he was on his way home from the bar in Cloverdale after drinking a couple of beers.

However, Soilleux found a broken bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey in the vehicle. Portable breath test results were pending.

Bowles, however, was cited for driving with a suspended license, driving without proof of financial responsibility and driving with a plate belonging to another vehicle.

The vehicle was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.
