County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Monday

• At 4:32 a.m. Nicki Marie Davis, 33, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a Marion County warrant.

Sunday

• At 1:13 p.m. Jason Douglas Rivers, 41, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a court order.

• At 3:41 a.m. Jason Lucas Prosser, 45, Fillmore, was housed at the jail for resisting law enforcement.

• At 2:46 a.m. James Andrew Stewart, 28, Greencastle, was booked in for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Friday

• At 12:27 p.m. James Winford Mowery, 34, Quincy, was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and on a Marion County warrant.

Indiana State Police

Indiana state troopers made one recent arrest in Putnam County:

• Late Saturday evening, Trooper David Cox initiated a traffic stop at Shadowlawn Avenue and Redbud Drive after he saw the driver commit several traffic violations.

Further investigation revealed that the driver, 19-year-old Tyler Joseph Covert, Greencastle, was under the influence of a controlled substance and in possession of marijuana.

He was booked into the Putnam County Jail at 12:06 a.m. Sunday.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Chad A. Buttery, 39, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 175 West approaching a left-hand corner in the roadway in a 1999 Ford F-150. Franklin S. Carrington, 43, Greencastle, was southbound in a 1999 Ford F-350 approaching the same turn.

Buttery told Deputy Josh Boller that as he entered the turn, Carrington crossed into his lane and hit his truck. Carrington said that his vehicle did not complete the turn and hit the other truck.

Boller noted that the road was iced over and very slick.

Buttery’s vehicle was towed.

Boller estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Kenneth R. Murray, 43, Cloverdale, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2012 Ford Econoline registered to Budget Motors, Greencastle, when a deer came from the east side of the road.

Murray applied his brakes and overcorrected the steering, causing the vehicle to run off the road on the west side.

The driver managed to avoid mailboxes and utility poles, but collided with a tree in the front yard of 16 N. U.S. 231, causing significant damage to the van.

At the time, the road had a layer of salt from brine solution that had been applied in preparation for low temperatures.

Deputy Daniel Birt reported that temperatures were in the mid-20s at the time.

The vehicle was towed.

Birt estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 1:50 p.m. on Friday, Megan L. May, 36, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2010 Dodge Caravan. May told Deputy Kyle Lee she noticed traffic slowing in the eastbound lane as a driver prepared to turn into a driveway.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to 11 recent dispatches:

• At 5:47 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 410 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 5:49 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at approximately 5:50 p.m.

• At 6:12 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 405 E. Hanna St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:15 and were advised that oil in a pan had caught fire, but was then extinguished. The area was ventilated, and GFD returned to station at 6:33 p.m.

• At 9:17 p.m. on Friday, GFD was called out on a possible grain bin fire at 1067 E. CR 350 South. Firefighters arrived at 9:26 to find that steam was issuing from the bin, which is normal. GFD went back into service at 9:41 p.m.

• At 10:23 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:26 but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm was reset. GFD left at 10:37 p.m.

• At 11:54 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Rescare Homecare for a gas leak. Units arrived at 11:59 and conducted readings, but Vectren was called to verify the issue as a smell was present. Vectren did find a small leak, which was repaired. GFD went back into service at 1:11 a.m. Sunday morning.

• At 12:15 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to 42 S. CR 175 West for a possible structure fire. Firefighters arrived at 12:17 and were advised by the homeowner that a power line had fallen on top of the residence. Power professionals were called to the scene, and power was shut off. GFD went back into service at 12:56 p.m.

• At 3:30 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 3:31 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 3:42 p.m.

• At 7:50 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to Blanchard House for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 7:51 but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm was reset GFD left at 7:55 p.m.

• At 8:35 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to 109 W. Hanna St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at approximately 8:36 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 8:42 p.m.

• At 11:44 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to Mill Pond Health Campus on a service call. Units arrived at 11:48 and were advised of a hot water smell. GFD monitored the building but found nothing showing. GFD went back into service at 11:54 p.m.

• At 12:51 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD went out on a public service call to 515 N. Indiana St. Units arrived at 12:53 and checked that a pilot light was off on a stove. GFD went back into service at approximately 1 p.m.

Additionally, GFD performed five medical assists and had two disregards during this time.
