DePauw women stay undefeated with win over Wisconsin-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Sydney Kopp poured in a career-high 36 points including four in overtime to help DePauw to a 70-69 win at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Tigers, ranked 10th in the D3hoops.com preseason poll and 12th by the coaches, moved to 3-0, while the Warhawks dropped to 2-1.

DePauw scored the game’s first six points and took an 18-15 lead as the first quarter ended. The Tigers’ lead reached as many as 10 at 29-19 after Kopp hit a 3-pointer with 4:37 left in the half. The Warhawks responded with a 12-1 run to take a 31-30 advantage with 1:29 left in the half. Kopp finished the half with a couple of buckets and the Tigers regained a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Tigers opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run to expand the lead to 44-33 with 5:40 remaining and later took a 47-40 lead into the fourth.

DePauw’s lead was still seven at 52-45 after Natalie Kehrt hit a pair of free throws with 5:58 left in regulation. The Warhawks scored the next eight to take a 53-52 lead with 4:34 left. The lead changed hands four times before Kopp hit a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining to give DePauw a 58-55 advantage.

Becky Raeder’s 3-pointer with 35 seconds left evened the count and, following a DePauw turnover, the hosts turned the ball over with one second left.

In the overtime period, the teams when nearly two minutes without scoring before Mya Shannon broke the ice with a three-point play with 3:02 left. The lead see-sawed and was tied at 66-66 before Kopp buried two free throws. Following a Whitewater turnover, Kopp was fouled and hit two more free throws with 21 seconds to make it 70-66. Megan Corcoran hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to trim the DePauw lead to 70-69. Kopp missed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left, but the Warhawks missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer.

Kopp’s 36 included 5-of-11 3-point shooting and 11 of 13 from the line and she added eight rebounds and five assists in the win. Claire Keefe added 12 points and shared rebounding honors with Kopp with eight.

Raeder paced Whitewater with 20 points and Corcoran followed with 11. Aleah Grundahl and Johanna Taylor each grabbed eight rebounds.

The Tigers shot 32.8 percent from the field to the Warhawks’ 37.7 percent and DePauw held a 45-40 rebounding edge and connected on 24 of 32 free throws.

DePauw returns to action on November 22 against Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a 5 p.m. CST game at Wisconsin Lutheran.

    the schedule this year is terrible in that we won't get to see the team in person until Dec. 31, New Years Eve! And then only 8 home games out of 16 until their regular season ends.
