Community Action offering winter energy assistance

The Energy Assistance Program through Western Indiana Community Action Agency Inc. began on Nov. 1, .

This federally-funded program is designed to help low-income families with the high costs of home energy. Income eligible families are provided a one-time benefit to their heating and electric accounts to offset some of the cost of utility bills during the winter months.

Application may be made by downloading an application at www.wicaa.org/energy.html, stopping in to a Community Action office or calling to request an application.

Appointments are not needed unless heating and/or electric service has been disconnected or a notice of disconnection has been received.

The Putnam County office is located at 620 Tennessee St., Greencastle, and can be reached at 653-4017.

Other offices include Vigo County (705 S. 5th St., Terre Haute, 812-234-3517) and Clay County (1367 E. U.S. 40, Brazil, 812-443-0122).

All offices are open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m.

Applicants should bring the following information to their appointment:

• Verification of income for all household members 18 and older for the three months prior to the month of application.

• Photo ID for the head of household.

• Social Security cards for all household members.

• Current heating and electric bills.

• Lease/rental agreement, if utilities are included in rent.
