DePauw Theatre continues its 2019-20 season with the play “Brainpeople” from critically acclaimed playwright José Rivera.

The plot involves a wealthy heiress who invites two wayward strangers to a grand feast commemorating the death of her parents. If they can make it through the night they will take home $20,000. Tensions rise, true colors are revealed and the exotic main course is not the only thing with claws.

Making her directorial debut on the Moore Theatre stage with “Brainpeople” is alum and director Felicia Santiago. Upon graduation in 2014, she studied at NYU and obtained a master’s in education theater: college and community settings. Since then she has been working throughout New York as an actor and director.

Santiago is thrilled to be back at DePauw University.

“It has been a dream of mine to come back to DePauw to direct and teach,” she said. “Being back in honor of diversity shows how far DePauw has come and is a symbol of faith and hope for how far it’ll continue to go. I’m grateful to get back to a place that didn’t provide me with opportunities on stage. It’s been a rewarding experience to help minds empower themselves with resources I’ve collected throughout my life – applicable to acting and life.”

Santiago’s exuberance for the stage and commitment to providing experiences she wishes she had while at DePauw shines through every aspect of the enthralling production.

Gracing the stage for her first production at DePauw is Aolani Cano, a freshman from Chicago. Cano is tasked with the role of “Layna” who is a slightly bookish stranger with a dark past. This production has helped her find her footing at DePauw.

“Working with such a small group of women created a unique bond which lead to a truly empowering and therapeutic experience. Felicia has supported and encouraged all of us during each step of production,” Cano said.

Alongside Cano will be DePauw stage veterans Amalia Crevani ’21 and Chloé Johnson ’22.

DePauw Theatre’s production of “Brainpeople” premieres this week in Moore Theatre. Productions run from Thursday, Jan. 30 to Saturday, Feb, 1 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at depauw.edu/arts or at the Green Center Box Office Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. or 90 minutes before each production.
