Greencastle man dies in Morgan County shooting

PARAGON -- A Saturday morning shooting in Morgan County left a Greencastle man dead.

Around 6:15 a.m., Morgan County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the 1600 block of North Olive Church Road for a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Deputies found the victim, identified as 36-year-old Ernie D. Phillips II of Greencastle, unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Morgan County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the death.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday morning. The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident.

Members of Phillips’ family have started a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses for the untimely death.

Phillips, nicknamed “Pokey,” leaves behind three children.

“Our family is asking for donations towards the unexpected funeral expense,” the family states on the page. “Anything over that expense will go toward a cash reward for the arrest of the monster who took him from us.”
