Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:14 a.m. on Friday, Alex J. VanHook, 26, Rockville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 just east of County Road 300 East in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado when he hit a deer.

VanHook told Deputy Brian Helmer he was going to attempt to drive the vehicle home.

Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 2:31 p.m. on Thursday, Christine Vann, 57, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2003 Honda Pilot.

Vann told Deputy Tanner Brown a wind gust pushed her vehicle into the opposite lane of travel, where a semi truck was approaching. She then turned quickly to get back into the westbound lane, overcorrecting and leaving the road.

Tire tracks showed the vehicle entering the ditch, traveling for a short distance and then going airborne. The vehicle landed in a position that caused it to go into a barrel roll. It was upright upon Brown’s arrival.

Vann complained of head pain on her right side and upper back pain. She was transported from the scene by Putnam County EMS.

The vehicle was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Bethany O. Fife, 29, Greencastle, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 1998 Honda Accord.

Deputy Robert Soilleux reported that Fife drove around a firefighter who was stopping and rerouting traffic and hit a downed tree that was blocking both lanes of traffic and power lines in the roadway. The car became stuck on top of the tree.

The tree was down due to a storm that had come through the area earlier in the evening, causing widespread damage.

Fife told Soilleux she had seen the firefighter north of the crash scene, but believed he was just waving people into the other lane. She said she did not see the lines in the roadway or the tree blocking the road until it was too late to stop.

Fife said she was not injured and refused medical aid.

The car was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 8:51 p.m. on Wednesday, Timothy S. Duggan, 23, Greencastle, was on his way to the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, responding to a call due to the severe thunderstorm that rolled through the area.

As Duggan was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, he hit a tree that was completely blocking the roadway.

Duggan said he was not injured. He took pictures of the scene and removed his vehicle from the road.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8:27 p.m. on Wednesday, Zachary E. Allbee, 27, Bainbridge, was northbound on County Road 700 East in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado.

Due to a severe storm at the time, there were heavy rains and high winds in the area, which had blown a tree across the road. Allbee could not avoid the tree, but the impact caused only minor damage to the pickup.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at less than $1,000.
