Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes

• At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Michael L. Hyneman, 72, Coatesville, was southbound on County Road 1000 East in a 1996 Volvo WG dump truck registered to Setty’s Contracting.

Hyneman told Deputy Kyle Lee he observed a vehicle in the roadway so he took an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision. As he maneuvered around the vehicle, the front passenger side tire of the dump truck entered the ditch on the west side and the rest of the truck was pulled off the roadway, where it hit a pole belonging to Hendricks Power.

The pole was severed near the base and the truck came to rest on its side.

The vehicle in the roadway then allegedly left the scene.

Hendricks fixed the pole to secure the scene and Curtis Wrecker removed the truck from the ditch. The contractor then cleaned up the debris from the roadway with heavy equipment.

Hyneman was not injured in the crash.

Lee estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 12:43 a.m. on Tuesday, Larry C. Williamson, 38, Cloverdale, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2016 Hyundai Tucson when he hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 3:41 p.m. on Monday, Beth L. Wilburn, 55, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 550 East in a 2001 Ford Escort.

A witness told Deputy Tanner Brown that as he crested a hill on 550 East, he saw Wilburn’s vehicle traveling north, but in the ditch. He said the vehicle entered the ditch, bottomed out and stopped.

The man said he stopped to check on the driver and it appeared she was suffering from some sort of medical condition. He broke a window to gain entry, then put the vehicle in park.

Brown reported that tire tracks indicated the car drove into the ditch at the crest of the hill and then traveled in the ditch for about 150 yards before stopping.

Wilburn was taken from the scene by ambulance.

Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, Jillian D. Gaston, 28, Cloverdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2015 GMC Acadia when she hit a deer.

Deputy Lee estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.
