Family fun event at Presbyterian church moved to Sunday

Saturday, June 20, 2020

With storms likely moving into the area, the night of family fun at the Greencastle Presbyterian Church has been moved to Sunday, June 21 at the same time and location. Families are invited out for a fun end to Father's Day.

There’s no way around it. This year has been hard for several reasons, which is why Greencastle Presbyterian Church wants to provide a free, safe, family-friendly event that can cheer spirits and help remind us we are still better together.

Working with Andy and Susan Lorimer of Big Bounce Fun House Rentals, the church will be hosting an evening full of entertainment in its parking lot — a “Silly Safari” animal show at 8:30 p.m. followed by a drive-in movie at 9:15 p.m.

The Silly Safari animal show will take place on the north side of the parking lot, and everyone is encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets and to wear facemasks.

“We just want to give our community something to look forward to,” Pastor Wes Kendall said, “and we know how much of a hit the Silly Safari has been in the past. We’ll be asking everyone to be mindful of each other and still staying six feet apart, but since we’ll be outside, we’ll have plenty of space for people to enjoy the show.”

Children and families will be able to see an array of animals firsthand, everything from possums to slimy frogs.

Following the Silly Safari animal show, families are invited to stay for Greencastle’s own drive-in movie night. The feature for the evening will be the story of two beloved “monsters” whose work will take them through many doors and into a whole new way of seeing.

Those who want to stay for the movie will be directed to the south side of the parking lot, where they can tune into a FM station for the movie. Green space will also be available for those who want to bring blankets and lawn-chairs to enjoy the show, and families are invited to bring their own snacks as their will be no concessions.

“We came up with this idea a few weeks ago,” Kendall said. “We realized we still had the chance to do something positive for our community in this time. Our goal with the Second Saturday events has always been to just provide something that is free and available to all families here in our community. We’ve been bummed we can’t do Second Saturdays this year, but this just seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

Big Bounce owner Susan Lorimer agrees.

“It’s exciting to bring this nostalgia and family fun to Greencastle,” she said. “We have been doing drive-in movies for many years, and we’re just grateful we can help our own community experience the joy of coming together in a way that is unifying but still safe.”

Greencastle Presbyterian Church is located at 653 S. CR 100 East. just north of the Putnam County Playhouse. The event is entirely free, but donations will be accepted for Beyond Homeless, Inc.

A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, June 21.
